I’ve been in kitchens where the sink is so shallow that you can hardly submerge a soup pot in the dishwater. Or the faucet spout is so low, you have to move it aside to maneuver dishes around as you wash. What a pain!
Mom was all for a deeper sink, too. She ought to know. When she built her house back in 1989, she didn’t make any special decisions about the kitchen sink, and so they just put in your standard contractor-grade sink. I know at the time mom was thinking, hey, I’m going to have a dishwasher, I won’t need a big sink to do dishes. But she soon learned that sometimes you don’t want to fill a quarter of your dishwasher with just one big stock pot, a giant colander or mixing bowl. I’m sure she wishes she could put in a nice deep sink like the one we picked out for me, but since there is nothing really wrong with hers, she can’t justify changing it. Maybe someday.
We were determined to get the deepest sink we could find, but we ran into a bit of a snag. We found out that our choices would be rather limited because we had a width restriction. I think there were about three models for us to choose from. We picked one we like, and I am very happy with it. The sinks with three bowls are awfully nice, though, if only one would have fit.
Anyway, mom and I highly recommend splurging for this extra if you are in the market for a new kitchen sink.

I am contemplating having the kitchen remodeled (it hasn\’t been touched since the house was built) and I\’ve been worried about the sink because all of the ones I\’ve seen are SO shallow. I am glad to know that there are deep sinks. How do you like the stainless steel? (It looks really nice.) Mine is white enameled cast iron.

Sandy-I have to confess, the sink had just been scrubbed (comet or baking soda) so it was extra shiny for the photo. But I love the stainless steel. It is really easy to clean up, even though I don\’t give it a thorough scrub that frequently. Now I was scouring it daily when the dishwasher was broken, but now the sink usually just handles dirty dishes.As for the width, I think if you have 36\” of cabinet width you\’ll have dozens of deep sinks to choose from. I only had about 34\”, so we had about 3 or 4 to choose from.-Christine

How deep is your faucet? Which model is it? We just bought and installed a super deep sink from IKEA that we love…but the faucet is only about 10\” deep which seems really insufficient to me.Thanks for the post.Eve

I totally agree with you on this one! When we bought our house, it had a sink that was only four inches deep. We replaced it with an eight inch deep one, and the difference is amazing. That plus the high arching faucet makes it so easy to fill or wash a big pot.

I should have differentiated between types of depth in my comment. The fact that the sink is deep from top to bottom is wonderful. It\’s just the fact that ours is also deep from hip to back wall that makes it difficult to find a suitable faucet. We still haven\’t. We use a sprayer and it\’s not terrible, but I wish the faucet could reach the midpoint of the sink.
